Sustainable mobility for cities in developing countries?

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY "MOBILITY AND TRANSPORT" N°1:
How can sustainable mobility strategies be developed for cities in the developing countries ?

Cities in developing countries are currently trying to deal with huge population growth and the accompanying growth in travel. They are struggling to keep up with these changes and to introduce sustainable urban transportation policies.
Sustainable development in these areas, partly related to the need to address climate change, is strongly promoted by international loan funds, so much so that the issues involved cannot be ignored by cities in developing countries.
Studies and plans undertaken in these cities are thus becoming more like those undertaken in cities in the so-called developed world, albeit with certain specific characteristics (artisanal transport and a lack of data, in particular).

The DAEI, the Directorate of International Economic Affairs, therefore commissioned a guide to be drawn up to help the people working in technical departments in these cities to deal with the issues, and suggesting a number of avenues to:
- analyse the urban transportation situation in these cities
- predict long-term trends
- define a sustainable transportation system
- implement the strategy defined

This guide, written by SYSTRA engineering consultants, will be published by Certu in 2008. Certu has also produced a report on the guide, which is now available.
