The tram: the keystone of Bordeaux's urban projects

Jean-François Guet   01-08-2008

Under the leadership of mayor Alain Juppé, Bordeaux has been able, in just a few years, to accomplish a major transformation, mobilising all the city’s highly dynamic forces to complete an ambitious urban project. At the heart of this project lies the tram, the symbolic keystone of this undertaking. After having initially envisaged a VAL metro system, the Bordeaux Urban Community finally opted for a tramway. The integration of this segregated transport network into the city was the occasion for a remarkable urban project, which was the fruit of a successful consultation process and the association of many talents, among them two winners of the Grand Prix d’Urbanisme award for urban planning – Michel Corajoud and Francis Cuillier – as well as architects Olivier Brochet, Emmanuel Lajus and Christine Pueyo, the designer Elizabeth de Portzamparc, and landscape architects from the Signes agency. The aim of this article, published in ISOCARP Review 03 in 2007, is to describe the approach taken and identify factors for success.
