Sputnic : a new European project on public transport of the new EU member countries
10-03-2008
Certu participates to the new European project which will deal with the very specific question of public transport in the new EU member countries. SPUTNIC aims at providing assistance and strategies adapted to the different participants and decision-makers of public transport in these countries.
Towards the new EU member countries The European SPUTNIC (Strategies for Public Transport in Cities) project has been devised from the results of the VOYAGER project. The purpose was to suggest new perspectives and to formulate recommendations for the creation of an attractive, clean, secure, accessible, efficient and affordable public transport towards the year 2020. New stakes have been identified. SPUTNIC has to provide assistance and strategies adapted to the different participants and decision-makers of public transport.
In this project, a network of experts from the new European member countries will be recruited to participate to the whole work that will consist in: the drawing up of a state of the art in the knowledge on urban mobility and public transport; a gathering of the best transferable practice ; an identification of the best tools and technical guides to pass on information to decision-makers and local professionals ; an opportunity to perfect or round off a training for some professionals ; a discussion and exchange platform between countries with very different contexts.
This network of experts will then have the mission to spread their acquired knowledge durably in their country of origin while maintaining the network of acquired contacts.
One of SPUTNIC major objectives is to give support to the new members to develop their public transport growth and competitiveness in the respect of the sustainable development, especially in terms of the reduction of the congestion of the trafic and of negative effects on the environment. As they enter the new European market, they have to face the inevitable increase of the motorization rate particularly.
