21 March 2008: Certu welcomes Japanese On-Demand Transport delegation
Robert Clavel 13-05-2008
A delegation from the University of Tokyo (Hiroyuki Yamato and Kota Tsubouchi) visited Certu on 21 March in order to present the results of their research into On-Demand Transport (ODT) systems. ODT is of particular interest for a number of reasons:
- declining passenger numbers on "classic" public transport routes, which are becoming increasingly unprofitable;
- older people and People with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) are seeking public transport solutions that are better adapted to their needs.
The delegation presented the different technologies used in their ODT system, including mobile phones, GPS, optimisation tools, and on-board navigation devices. Trials of the system have been carried out in Kashiwa (an urban area of 25 km², using 3 vehicles) and Unzen (a rural area of 900 km² environ, using around 30 vehicles). The University of Tokyo is interested in results and feedback obtained by European ODT projects.
