Given that road safety figures have reached an impasse and the high levels of speeding in France, it is obvious that traditional methods of control are inadequate and that we need to try a new, more automated strategy. The ambitious programme launched in 2002 has been quick to produce results, and it should be added that several countries now wish to copy our approach. Automated control and punishment systems now cover other violations, including jumping a red light.
