Mayors and road safety

In view of his or her duties, the mayor plays a key role in the success of road safety policy. With this in mind, a charter has been signed between the French Ministry of Transport’s Sécurité Routière committee and the French Mayors’ Association. This charter led to publication of a guide by La Documentation Française in November 2007: Sécurité routière ce que peuvent faire des maires, (Road safety – what can mayors do?) which sets out the good practices presented during regional Road Safety Days.Indeed, in partnership with and intended for the French Mayors’ Association (AMF), Certu organises regional Mairie 2000 et la Sécurité Routière road safety conference days. These are targeted at mayors and technical personnel working for municipal or State services. The basic idea is to promote good practices: mayors discuss the issues with other mayors. The CETE agencies in the geographic area in question provide the support required insofar as concerns technical content (identifying local cases of interest, layout, etc.).Several one-day conferences have already been held:11 October 2007 in St Germain-en-Layes for the rural part of the Ile de France 26 October 2006 in Cour-Cheverny for départements in the Centre region 23 March 2006 in Peronne for départements in the regions of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardie 6 October 2005 in Fontenay-sous-Bois (94) for the urban part of the Ile de France outside Paris 27 January 2005 in Laxou (54) for the départements of Lorraine 1 July 2004 in Cabourg (14) for the départements of Normandy 8 October 2003 in Perpignan for the Aude, Ardèche, Hérault and Pyrénées Orientales 23 April 2003 in Chambéry for Ain, Drome, Isère, Rhône, Savoie and Haute Savoie 12 October 2001 in Danjoutin for Belfort area, Juras, Haute-Saône, the Doubs, Haut-Rhin and Les Vosges In 2000 in La Rochelle for the Charente, Charente-Maritime, Haute Vienne and La VendéeThe proceedings of these conferences will soon be available on the website.A brochure entitled “Les maires et la sécurité routière” (Mayors and road safety) was published in conjunction with the AMF in 2003, followed by another in 2005.A presentation of the scope of mayoral authority in this area was given by Didier Harlin from the CETE Méditerranée, reviewed by Benoît Hiron from CERTU, Jacques Couty and Bérangère Varin from the CETE Normandie Centre.
