Since 1 January 2002, the regional councils have been the authorities fully in charge of organising public transport services. In the Île de France region, this organisation has been undergoing radical changes. If only for its part in the provision of services covering built-up areas (regional express trains and the RER suburban services around Paris), regional public transport requires in-depth observation and analysis.
