This is a technique that is widely used in the United States and some other countries. Following a few attempts at development in the late 1970s, access control is now being reintroduced in France: on the Bordeaux ring-road, two access routes have been controlled for several years, and a scheme involving around 70 access stations is underway in the Paris region. The idea is to only allow normal traffic flow on the expressway; lights are therefore installed at access points: this generally improves traffic flow on the expressway by a few percentage points, without affecting the parallel network.
