Managing urban transportation resources is a major area of engineering expertise. A 5-year programme, which comes to an end in 2007, is designed to improve the integration of transportation into urban planning, development and policy. It is based on a new and broader vision of what constitutes urban territory and involves methods aimed at developing long-term urban planning policy. It places the emphasis on diversified transportation and traffic-calming solutions, working toward the emergence of sustainable cities with a high quality environment.
