Thus they build squares, parks and gardens on marshy ground, land not authorised for development, and wooded slopes. All these spaces compose a unique planted landscape, an assortment of green infrastructures that shape the urban framework. What role do these green swathes play in the urban fabric? Why do these breathing spaces prosper in the midst of the city? How do these green spaces resist pressure from property developers? This research report attempts to answer these questions and deals with the history of green infrastructures in the town planning schemes of the city of Lyon. It covers the drafting of discourses, and highlights the concepts and notions deployed to justify the measures taken to protect and develop green spaces. The arguments used remain marked by the socioeconomic contexts of the eras in which they were formulated: embellishment in the 1930s, leisure areas in the 1960s, and the sacrilisation of nature for the sake of biodiversity in the 1990s. The author, Stéphane AUTRAN, emphasises the remarkable constancy of the policies implemented. They are based on a few simple ideas guided by a handful of actors that make use of regulatory tools and administrative structures and go beyond political differences. This hypothesis relies on two reference sites - the Monts d'Or and the Miribel-Jonage park - that are subjected to detailed analysis that retraces their successive roles in town planning schemes. The study examines the strategies of embellishment carried out by the city of Lyon seen through the boom for small gardens and the greening of Fourviere hill thanks to the development of the Hauteurs park.
